Unemployment Lessons #3: Pep talk + action = better outcomes Print E-mail

Mr. Lifedefiner, who is both over 50 and currently out of the active regularly employed workforce, wants to share his first-hand experience, trying his best to emphasize the positive and find the silver lining in this very challenging situation.  In Unemployment Lessons #3, Mr. Lifedefiner notes the value of pep talk in motivating people into action as basic ingredients for better results.

In the world of sports, whether be it the Super Bowl, the World Series, the NBA Finals, or the World Cup, or in any game, we have seen how a well-delivered pep talk can spur the team to victory.  Similarly, job hunters can also benefit from a “pep talk”, wherein p= patience; e= enthusiasm; and p=perseverance.

Patience.  One has to realize and accept that there is a process to doing things. Sure, we want to have that job immediately if possible, but then having patience allows one to appear confident inspite of the direness of the situation as well as having the chance to wait for perhaps a better opportunity.

Enthusiasm. Positive energy and enthusiasm are key qualities for if there is no innate drive the move forward will be shorter.

Perseverance.  In today’s tight job market, chances are there will be instances of rejection even after an apparently great interview experience. Never give up. Learn from the experience. Move on, and be stronger than before and richer in terms of wisdom.

In the job search process, better outcomes usually means snagging that sought for job. Hopefully, this pep talk combined with well-planned action will translate to better outcomes, especially as the overall economy continues to recover.
