Live life to the fullest! Print E-mail
On Life to the Max According to Edward Abbey, when Leo Tolstoy (the Russian writer, essayist, novelist, and philosopher) was pestered by Rainer Maria Rilke (considered one of the greatest lyric poets of Germany) about techniques of writing. Tolstoy replied: "If you want to write, write!"  In a similar vein, we can paraphrase it to apply to living: "If you want to live, live it well and good!"

Related to this, some of the world's greatest minds, including Einstein, claimed they needed from 8 up to 10 hours of sleep a day, especially if there was something of importance to be done.  Given that the average US life expectancy is approximately 77.5 years (74.8 and 80.1 years, for men and women, respectively; based on 2003 data from the National Center for Health Statistics, US Dept of Health and Human Services), this translates to about 23 years of sleep and 54 years of time to allocate for doing all the good stuff that we love and like to do.  When we look at these figures, we realize the importance of prioritizing and valuing the times that we spend and share with our loved ones. Treasure every moment and that way you can see life in its big picture scale instead of just a blur in the memory.
