John Donne Revisited Print E-mail

John Donne was considered as one of the - if not the – most outstanding English Metaphysical poets of his time (which was in the 1600s).  Donne's literary work combined wit and seriousness and was portrayed in a more personal style compared to what was in vogue at the time. The story of John Donne is akin to the innovators and visionaries of today who go above what is ordinary and look beyond the horizons. This is the same fire that has motivated man to conquer new worlds beyond his shores. We should avoid falling into the false sense of security of our comfort zones. That way, the embers our nascent ideas will transform into flames of action and visible marks of accomplishment and success.

As an example, an excerpt from his poem “Confined Love” is as follows:

“…..Who e'er rigged fair ship to lie in harbors
And not to seek new lands, or not to deal withal?
Or built fair houses, set trees, and arbours,
Only to lock up, or lese to let them fall?
Good is not good, unless
A thousand it possess,
But doth waste with greediness.”

But then knowing all these is one thing. Doing them and applying them would make John Donne proud!
